The Hour of Disillusionment

dissillusionmentEven when sin and misunderstanding burden the communal life, is not the sinning brother still a brother, with whom I, too, stand under the Word of Christ?  Will not his sin be a constant occasion for me to give thanks that both of us may live in the forgiving love of God in Jesus Christ?  Thus the very hour of disillusionment with my brother becomes incomparably salutary, because it so thoroughly teaches me that neither of us can ever live by our own words and deeds, but only by that one Word and Deed which really binds us together  the forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ.  When the morning mists of dreams vanish, then dawns the bright day of Christian Fellowship. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This is one of most humbling quotes of Christian charity and love that I have ever read.  Knowing Bonhoeffer and his character, it comes as no surprise, and after reading of his Christ-like character, I imagine he did a fair job of living it out.

Two things stick out to me:

  • My brother’s sin is not an annoyance but an occasion to give thanks of the forgiving love of Christ (opposite of what I typically think).
  • The hour of disillusionment with my brother becomes incomparable salutary because it teaches me to live only by the words of Christ (the hope I should have instead of discouragement).
